Are you seeing a drop in your Email metrics? Open rate is suffering & Conversion Rate is going down with every email? Your email list isn't dead. You're just treating everyone the same. Here's how to fix that with Segmentation

I like to split my inactive email lists into 2 groups:

**1. Semi-active subscribers**

People who still open or click your emails, but not often.

**2. Inactive subscribers**

People who haven't opened or clicked in a long time.

## How to segment out inactive & semi-inactive subscribers in MailerLite?

Here's how I segment my subscribers in MailerLite:

<iframe width="600" height="340" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Au1JV-n2hOo?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen title="How to Segment Inactive subscribers in MailerLite" style="position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 100%; height: 100%; border-width: medium; border-style: none; border-color: currentcolor; border-image: none;"></iframe>

### Step 1: Go to Subscribers

Log in to your MailerLite account.

Go to **Subscribers → Segments**.

Click **Create segment** and give it a name.

For this example, we'll call it **Inactive Subscribers**.

### Step 2: Set Your Segment Rules

Now, add two conditions.

**Rule 1: Emails sent**

- Select Stats → Emails sent.
- Set the condition to "Is greater than".
- Enter 10.

**Rule 2: Emails opened**

- Select Stats → Emails opened.
- Set the condition to "Is equal to".
- Enter 0.

Make sure both rules use "AND".

MailerLite now finds subscribers who received more than 10 emails but never opened any of them.

### Step 3: Save Your Segment

Click Save.

That's it!

You now have a segment of subscribers who haven't opened any of your emails despite receiving more than 10.

### Step 4: Semi-Inactive Subscribers Segment

Use these rules:

- Emails sent: Greater than 5.
- Emails opened: Less than 2.

Use AND between both conditions.

Now you have two groups:

1. **Inactive:** Received more than 10 emails and opened zero.
2. **Semi-active:** Received more than 5 emails and opened fewer than 2.

## Why does segmenting inactive subscribers matter?

Because both groups need a different approach. One type of messaging can bring back inactive subscribers but the same messaging won't increase the activity of semi-inactive subscribers

### For semi-inactive subscribers:

- Send them more useful content.
- Test different offers.
- Give them a reason to engage again.

### For inactive subscribers:

- Run a win-back campaign.
- Try a special offer or discount.
- Give them one last chance before removing them.

## Who needs this?

Coaches, authors, service-based business owners, anyone with an email list that's been growing for months or years.

If your ESP's subscriber quota is filling up, you can weed out inactive subscribers and make room for newer subs.

Noticing a decline in open rate & engagement rate? Those will increase immediately after the cleanup.

A clean list means better engagement, fewer wasted sends, and better email results.
